How to recognise India in Street View

Drives on the left

India's signage often mixes English with Hindi and a regional script, which can help you place the state as well as the country.

At a glance

  • Driving side: Left.
  • Language: Hindi and English nationally, plus regional scripts such as Tamil, Telugu and Bengali.
  • Plates: White for private vehicles, yellow for commercial, usually with black text.

On the road

  • Dense, mixed traffic with auto-rickshaws and motorbikes.
  • Brightly painted trucks, often lettered with 'Horn OK Please'.
  • Frequent speed breakers.

Landscape & architecture

  • Everything from Himalayan mountains to the tropical south and dry agricultural plains.
