India's signage often mixes English with Hindi and a regional script, which can help you place the state as well as the country.
At a glance
- Driving side: Left.
- Language: Hindi and English nationally, plus regional scripts such as Tamil, Telugu and Bengali.
- Plates: White for private vehicles, yellow for commercial, usually with black text.
On the road
- Dense, mixed traffic with auto-rickshaws and motorbikes.
- Brightly painted trucks, often lettered with 'Horn OK Please'.
- Frequent speed breakers.
Landscape & architecture
- Everything from Himalayan mountains to the tropical south and dry agricultural plains.
